Summary of Powers of Attorney and Advance Medical Directives

Most people focus on their will when thinking about estate planning. But planning for possible disability is part of the process as well. There are two aspects to this: management of your financial affairs, and medical decision-making. A well-drafted durable power of attorney allows your agent broad authority to handle all manner of financial matters for you. An advance medical directive authorizes someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so. Of course, both roles require someone whom you trust completely.
